Tuesday 28 November 2006 Supperclub: Meeting Agenda: The discusion may include November 2006 election results as compared to state ballot measure recommendations. Other items which are open for discussion are the Pacific Legal Foundation and illegal immigration. Recent links to these topics can be found at the bottom of the articles and links page. The meeting was attended by Bill Slaninko, Bruce and Robin Graf, Dan Fernandes, Robert H. Biggadike, Al Lax, Angela Keaton and M. Carling. This is the second meeting attended by M. Carling and the first for Angela Keaton. Angela is the new Executive Director of the California Libertarian Party. We are happy to have these Officers attend our meetings. Chair Dan Fernandes called the meeting to order, introduced Angela Keaton, and asked her if she would lke to speak. Angela said she had been in her new position for about a week and a half and that she was replacing David Ruprecht. She said the Libertarians who were elected to non-partisan position was still being determined. She said she was interested in both strategy and philosophy. Angela also said that whe was excited about the national election. Bill Slasninko, a medical professional employed in the healthcare industry, said he favored caps (i.e. limits) on jury punitive awards for pain and suffering. Dan Fernandes said punitive damages were largely based on how much money the defending party had. Angela Keaton said she opposed limits on punitive damages.

Tuesday 24 October 2006 Supperclub: Meeting Agenda: Topics for Discussion: State Ballot Measures and RISE IN BRIBERY TESTS INTEGRITY OF U.S. BORDER . Donations to support the TV program Libertarian Alternative with Mark Selzerr will be taken. Donors contributing $10 or more will be given a four-program DVD.

The meeting was attended by Bruce and Robin Graf, Bill Slaninko, Dan Fernandes, Al Lax, Robert H. Biggadike, and Mars Ramage. Chair Dan Fernandes criticized the politics of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger by pointing out that he has supported minimum wage laws, the global warming lobby, the establishment of hydrogen refueling stations, and that he has failed to balance the budget. Dan then handed out and discussed a paper called "Easy '&' Fun Phone Calling Steps!". This paper contained instructions for calling voters to remind them they have Art Olivier as a choice for governor.

Secretary and Webmaster Robert H. Biggadike then said that according to the article, RISE IN BRIBERY TESTS INTEGRITY OF U.S. BORDER in the Los Angeles Times of Monday, 23 October 2006, "200 public employees have been charged with helping to move narcotics or illegal immigrants across the U.S.-Mexican border since 2004". ...Criminal charges have been brought against Border Patrol agents, local police, a county sheriff, motor vehicle clerks, an FBI supervisor, immigration examiners, prison guards, school district officials and uniformed personnel of every branch of the U.S. military, among others. ...Bribery payments have topped $1 million. ...the Alvarez brothers...netted $1.5 million in bribes." Biggadike pointed out that this is what happens when the government outlaws certain goods such as marijuana or services such as the labor of illegal aliens.

Mars Ramage then discussed the Pacific Legal Foundation.

Tuesday 26 September 2006 Supperclub: Meeting Agenda: Open discussion; suggested topic: Immigration reform. The meeting was attended by Derick Petzold, Dan Fernandes, Bill Slaninko, Bruce & Robin Graf, M. Carling, Robert H. Biggadike, and Mars Ramage. This was the first of our meetings attended by M. Carling. M. Carling is a very well known libertarian who is on both the California board and the national board. Derick Petzold, a student at Pasadena City College, also was attending our meeting for the first time. Derick hopes to give students at Pasadena City College an alternative to just the Democrats and Republicans. The abortion issue was discussed. Also immigration was discussed. Dan Fernandes presented an argument against the idea that keeping the border tightly closed to Mexicans helps Mexico reform its economy.

Tuesday 22 August 2006 Supperclub: Open discussion; suggested topic: action taken at the recent national party convention to delete much of the party platform. The meeting was attended by Marian Smithson, Bruce & Robin Graf, Al Lax, Dan Fernandes, Bill Slaninko, and Robert H. Biggadike.

There was some discussion of illegal aliens. The discussion was somewhat contentious. Robert H. Biggadike stated that hiring illegal aliens is good for the American economy since it drives down labor costs and helps to increase profits. In response to this, Bill Slaninko made the incredible statement, why not bring back slavery since slavery is good for the economy. Although the word, slavery, sounded clear and distinct, I have a hard time believing my ears. A selfish businessman who hires an illegal alien so as to increase profits, has done one of the most wonderful things that can be done for an illegal alien. It is therefore incredible that Slaninko would think that has something to do with slavery.

Robin Graf, a confessed non-libertarian, expressed the opinion that illegal immigrants come here to mooch off of the American welfare state. But she added that employers who hire illegal immigrants should be punished. In the Intellectual Activist article, Americans Against the American Dream: To Be Anti-Immigration Is to Be Anti-American, Robert Tracinski says, "Also look through the rationalization that the anti-immigrationists are concerned that foreigners come here to mooch off of the American welfare state. Why, then, are restrictions on immigration aimed precisely at those who seek to work? And why do the controls target workers at all skill levels, from manual laborers to doctors and software programmers?"

Dan Fernandes along with Robert H. Biggadike seemed to be supportive of illegal aliens. Bruce Graf along with Robin Graf and Bill Slaninko seemed to be opposed.

Dan Fernandes said that the Libertarian Party Platform had been reduced from 61 planks to 15 planks. One of the reasons given for this reduction was to avoid restricting the candidates in their campaigns. However, skepticism was expressed as to whether this was necessary. More information can be found at National Platform of the Libertarian Party Adopted in Convention, July 2, 2006, Portland Oregon

There was discussion of development of a web page for use in the campaign of Marian Smithson for California State Treasurer.

Tuesday 25 July 2006 Supperclub: Meeting Agenda: Book review, "Hot Talk, Cold Science - Global Warming's Unfinished Debate", by S. Fred Singer, The Independent Institute. The meeting was attended by Bruce Graf, Robin Graf, Bill Slaninko, Dan Fernandes, Robert H. Biggadike, and Mars Ramage. In reviewing the book, Dan Fernandes said measurements show 360 parts per million of carbon dioxide today as compared to 280 prior to the industrial revolution. This approximately 30% increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide appears small when observed on a plot of atmospheric carbon dioxide versus time over a long period of earth history. Humans are responsible for 3% of the carbon dioxide emission from the earth. If atmospheric carbon dioxide were to fall to 190 ppm, it would be harmful to plants. Increased crop yields are a benefit of an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Mars Ramage pointed out that a major volcanic eruption emits more carbon dioxide than human activities in an entire year. Mars also mentioned that the late Carl Sagan switched from warming of an ice age to warning of global warming.

Tuesday 27 June 2006 Supperclub:
The meeting was attended by Bruce Graf, Robin Graf, Mars Ramage, Robert H. Biggadike, Dan Fernandes, Bill Slaninko and Al Lax. Robert H. Biggadike mentioned that the book, "How Capitalism Saved America", by Thomas J. DiLorenzo (the author of "The Real Lincoln") was a very good book. Mars Ramage commented that capitalism saved the Pilgrims when William Bradford ended communal farming and assigned to each family a parcel of land thereby greatly increasing productivity. Dan Fernandes said he was reading the book, "Saying Yes" by Reason senior editor, Jacob Sullum. He said the book argued the case that there are people who use marijuana and other drugs but who function as quite useful productive working persons. Mars Ramage, a former school teacher, said he had observed that divorce and drugs have a bad effect on high school students. Al Lax mentioned a book called "Freakonomics" by Economist Steven Levitt, a professor at the University of Chicago, and Stephen J. Dubner. Freakonomics illustrate Levitt's wide-ranging curiosity: "Why Do Drug Dealers Still Live with Their Moms?" and "How Is the Ku Klux Klan Like a Group of Real-Estate Agents?" are two.

There followed a discussion of illegal drugs. There were some comments regarding legal problems encountered resulting from the use of illegal drugs.

Tuesday 23 May 2006 Supperclub:
The meeting was attended by Dan Fernandes, Bruce Graf, Robin Graf, and Robert H. Biggadike. Propositions 81 and 82 in the upcoming election were discussed. All of those present appeared to be against both of these propositions. Chair Dan Fernandes reported on the LPLAC (Libertarian Party of Los Angeles County) meeting of Monday, 22 May 2006. He stated that LPLAC records show Region 67 had $213. He also stated that LPLAC voted to leave the newsletter, "The Los Angeles Libertarian", the same.

Tuesday 25 April 2006 Supperclub: The meeting was attended by Dan Fernandes, Bill Slaninko, Alexa Lamoureux,Theodore Moller, Mars Ramage, Bruce Graf, Robin Graf, Robert H. Biggadike, and Al Lax. Mars Ramage recommended voting against the pre-school initiative in the upcoming election. A discussion of education ensued and there was general agreement with Mar's recommendation. Chair Dan Fernandes announced that he had been asked to run for Vice Chair of LPLAC (Libertarian Party of Los Angeles County).

Tuesday 28 March 2006 Supperclub:
The meeting was attended by Bill Slaninko, Bruce Graf, Robin Graf, Dan Fernandes, Al Lax, Alexa Lamoureux, and Robert H. Biggadike. Chair Dan Fernandes reported on the LPLAC meeting of Monday night: LPLAC voted to make the publication, "The Los Angeles Libertarian" quarterly rather than bi-monthly in order to reduce costs. Judy Alter (JUDYALTER@COMCAST.NET) of Election Justice was the speaker at the LPLAC meeting. She made statements which seemed to indicate that the Republicans might be taking votes from the Libertarians and Greens. She seriously criticized Los Angeles County election official, Connie McCormick. She indicated that vote counting software was being treated as proprietary even though the law appears to require that it be open source code.

Tuesday 28 February 2006 Supperclub:
The meeting was attended by Bill Slaninko, Bruce Graf, Robin Graf, Dan Fernandes, and Robert H. Biggadike. Chair Dan Fernandes circulated the state treasurer's report and a petition to restrict the use of eminent domain. The petition was signed by attendees. Also photos from the services for Jon M. Ridgeway were passed around. Recent issues of "The Freeman" and Cato literature were given away. Dan provided a report on the 2006 State Convention, Liberty At Sea 2006, and answered questions. Dan said that an expression of opposition to the issuance of driver's licenses was passed. Dan said this might cause some people to not take the party seriously. There was a comment to the effect that since roads are at present owned by the government, continued licensing of drivers might be appropriate until such time that roads become private. Dan mentioned that the driver's license issue arose in connection with a discussion of the treatment of illegal aliens. Dan also stated that the Election Reform plank was modified to advocate the use of voter-verification systems using paper outputs for vote counting and that a proposal that persons accused of crimes should be able to compel witnesses to appear was defeated. Dan also mentioned that a proposal calling for a moratorium on the death penalty was defeated and that wording was added to the Marriage plank advocating that until California ends its involvement in marriage, the state should issue marriage licenses to any adults without regard to gender. Dan also reported on the discussion of a Military plank and that a resolution was passed opposing Proposition 82, the "California Preschool For All Act". Biggadike, Dan Fernandes, Robin Graf, Bruce Graf, Bill Slaninko, Al Cuperus, and Marian Smithson. Dan Fernandes mentioned that he had been contacted regarding the circulation of petitions. One petition was on the limitation of eminent domain to those cases where a direct public benefit was achieved other than just the dubious benefit of securing more tax revenue for government entities. Another petition was on limiting eminent domain and also eliminating rent control. Dan said he would recommend that primary effort be on the petition which only limited eminent domain, so as to obtain more signatures. Marian Smithson, candidate for State Treasurer, said she favored limiting the period of indebtedness of bonds to no longer than the useful life of the project financed by the bonds. The purpose of this is to avoid causing future taxpayers to pay for projects for which they receive no benefits. She also said State Treasurer was a non-policy office. James Chewings said this might be his last meeting since he is moving to Ontario.

The ballot propositions in the election of Tuesday, 8 November 2005 were discussed. Others attending were Treasurer, James L. Chewings, Chair and LPLAC Regional Representative Dan Fernandes, Webmaster and Secretary Robert H. Biggadike, and Bill Slaninko. Private and public education were discussed. The view that private education involving a parent forcing a child into a mold can harm liberty was expressed. The subtle nature of indoctrination resulting from public school education was mentioned. The determination of jobs by the free market and consumer choice was pointed out. Attendees were informed that 2 links discussing Supreme Court nominee, John Roberts, including abortion and religion had been added to the Articles and Other Links page of our web site. Southern Vice Chair, Mark Selzer was the speaker. Prior to the arrival of the speaker, the benefits of free trade were discussed. CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) was discussed. It was mentioned that NTU (National Taxpayer Union) had come out in support of CAFTA. Mark said a better way to prevent airline hijackings was to arm pilots and rely on the fists of passengers. Mark said that the average cost per taxpayer for the war in Iraq was $5000 per year. An informal poll was taken on a resolution to get out of Iraq now and the vote was 4 to 3 in favor of the resolution.

Tuesday 24 May 2005 Supperclub:
The meeting was attended by Bruce Graf, Robin Graf, Robert H. Biggadike, Alexa, Dan Fernandes, and Bill Slaninko. Robin mentioned an upcoming convention for motorcycle enthusiasts. Bill Slaninko reported that he had attended the convention of Young Americans for Freedom in Las Vegas. He said there were interesting speakers. The following was discussed regarding the book, "The Real Lincoln" by Thomas J. DiLorenzo: Lincoln supported high tariffs which adversely affected the South because of its need to trade agricultural products for manufactured goods. Lincoln favored colonization so as to rid America of persons with African ancestry by shipping black persons to places such as Liberia or to a new colony to be formed in central America called Lincolnia. Lincoln passed up opportunities to free slaves even though peaceful emancipation was occurring throughout the world. Abraham Lincoln's real agenda was the Whigs economic policy, mercantilism. The idea that secession was "treason" is a myth. DiLorenzo points out that "IN THE EYES of the American founding fathers, the most fundamental principle of political philosophy was the right of secession". Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus and was responsible for the imprisonment of innocent civilians who dared to criticize the government.

Chair Dan Fernandes reported that we had only about $5. He mentioned that our web site should be changed to show that we are Region 67 of the Libertarian Party of Los Angeles County (LPLAC). The West Covina 4th of July Celebration was discussed but no motion was made regarding participation in this event.

You may click for MAP from Mapquest and then get driving directions.

In the discussion that followed, a book by DiLorenzo called "The Real Lincoln" was mentioned. The great libertarian economist, Walter Williams, has stated that DiLorenzo was right at Lincoln and DiLorenzo .

Tuesday 22 March 2005 Supperclub:
Treasurer, James L. Chewings reported that we had only $22 left in the bank. Chair Dan Fernandes expressed the opinion that we should close our account at Bank of America and let LPLAC (Libertarian Party of Los Angeles County) maintain our funds. A major drain on our finances is the $50 a month given to Mark Selzer. This $50 is for the purchase of 2 tapes along with other associated costs.
Secretary and Webmaster, Robert H. Biggadike pointed out that we need a link from the Libertarian Party of California web site to the schedule in California cities of the Libertarian Alternative TV show, since our region financially supports this show. He mentioned that money could be saved by putting the web site now called http://www.libertarianalternative.org on a free hosting service. Chair Dan Fernandes said that he had paid $25 to reserve space at the Diamond Bar Birthday Party from 11 AM to 6 PM on 17 April 2005. He said he plans to buy copies of the World's Smallest Quiz for distribution at the event.
